LifeSavers 101: Essential Skills Every School Staff Member Should Know

Posted by Wayne Bennett on

In my years responding to emergencies, from towering fires to devastating earthquakes, I've seen firsthand the unpredictability of disasters. However, one constant has always stood out: the irreplaceable value of immediate and effective response. As educators and caretakers in a school setting, your role is pivotal, especially when the unexpected strikes. That's why I'd like to introduce you to something I passionately advocate for - the LifeSavers.

What are the LifeSavers?

At the core of any emergency response lie three life-threatening conditions that can manifest post-disaster:

  1. Breathing
  2. Bleeding
  3. Shock

Addressing these three conditions can drastically improve survival chances. LifeSavers are a set of essential skills tailored to control these conditions even before professional medical help arrives.

Breathing Troubles? Here's a 5 Minute CPR

If someone is facing difficulty breathing, especially if they're unconscious, placing them in the recovery position can clear airway obstructions and facilitate easier breathing. It's a simple yet effective maneuver that can be the difference between life and death. If they are not breathing, call 9-1-1 and perform CPR.

Tackling Severe Bleeding: Every Second Counts

An uncontrollable bleed can be fatal in minutes. Your priority? Stop or limit the flow. Using trauma dressings, applying firm pressure, and elevating the wound (when possible) can stem bleeding.

Handling Shock: More Than Just a Mental State

Shock, in medical terms, means the body isn't getting the blood flow it needs. Symptoms might include clammy or bluish skin, rapid heartbeat, and shallow breathing. Laying the person down, elevating their legs, and keeping them warm can help combat shock.

The Power of Preparedness

While the LifeSavers might sound basic, their impact is profound. In my experience, whether it's a minor incident in the schoolyard or a major natural disaster, these skills have repeatedly proven to be game-changers. Every educator, irrespective of their primary role, should be equipped with this knowledge.
