1994 Northridge Earthquake: A Reminder To Get Prepared

Posted by Wayne Bennett on

KMIR News visited our warehouse the other day to talk about the 1994 Northridge Earthquake 25th year anniversary, and what I remembered of the disaster.

It was January 17, 1994 at 4:31 a.m when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook Southern California, killing 57 people, injuring more than 9,000, and causing widespread damage.

I can still remember the overwhelming number of resources needed and sent to the event to handle the fires, collapses and injuries. Most civilians were totally unprepared for the overwhelming number of first aid emergencies that early morning.

For me, it was another reminder of the importance of my business, Disaster Survival Skills, LLC and why we train and prepare the public to be able to survive disasters and be on their own for days. I knew as a firefighter we can’t be everywhere in the event of an earthquake, so we must help the public get prepared and care for themselves in the first days following the emergency.

Learning to extinguish your own fires, rescue their family members and then be able to provide first aid care will always be skills that will save lives.

This is the reason why a good quality first aid kit is always the top priority when preparing that I recommend.

A good first aid kit will have trauma dressings, burn dressings, splints, paramedic scissors and things of that nature so you can take care of our own families immediately.

If you want to become your family’s hero, a survivor and not a victim in the next large-scale earthquake, get prepared now.

You can use our Disaster Preparedness Calculator for Family to guide you in your preparation.
