Hurricanes are strong storms that cause life-and-property threatening hazards that may cause flood, storm surge, high winds and tornadoes. Preparedness is the best protection for your family and property.
Basic Hurricane Preparation For Home
Assess your home’s risks: Will your home survive a storm surge or high winds? Reduce property damage by retrofitting to secure and reinforce the roof, windows and doors, including the garage doors. Or have a professional inspect your home, including your foundation and landscaping to get an idea of what repairs or changes you need to fortify your house.
Remove debris: Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so before hurricane season trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe.
Prepare an evacuation kit: Have a kit with water, food, clothing, extra medications, pet supplies, and first-aid kit supplies stored in a safe place. You should also include a battery-powered weather radio and flashlight. Here’s our Family Emergency Kit that is perfect 72 hours Disaster Grab and Go bag for the family.
Close and board windows: If a hurricane is imminent, boarding your windows will help protect your house from excess damage. If you don’t have storm shutters, use plywood sheets to board your windows. Make sure they are cut to the appropriate dimensions before there is a storm warning.
Fill your car’s gas tank It’s always a good practice to always fill your gas tank, with or without disaster warning.
